lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic

If there’s one crucial lesson from the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s this: your metabolic health determines how well you handle infections. Clinical research and real-world observations have consistently shown that the biggest predictor of poor outcomes is metabolic syndrome—a cluster of conditions that includes high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, excess abdominal fat, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels. Having even one of these conditions significantly increases your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

The reality is alarming: 82% of the U.S. population is metabolically unhealthy, with over 70% overweight or obese and more than 50% diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes. But here’s the silver lining—you have the power to change it. Your metabolic health is in your hands.

The Root Cause of Chronic Disease

Poor metabolic health is at the core of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, fatty liver disease, autoimmune disorders, mental health issues, and more. These aren’t separate diseases with different causes; they all stem from the same underlying problem: poor nutrition.

The Solution is Simple—But Not Easy

No medication, supplement, or gym routine alone can fix this. The answer is clear: fix your nutrition, and better health will follow. The journey isn’t always easy, but it is straightforward.

That’s where I come in. Our mission is to coach, guide, and support you in reclaiming your health and taking back control of your life. Let’s get started.

Our Approach to Metabolic Health

Most modern healthcare focuses on managing symptoms with medications rather than addressing the root cause of disease. But what if you could take control of your health, reduce or even eliminate your need for medications, and feel better than you have in years?

That’s exactly what I help my patients achieve.

A Root-Cause Approach to Chronic Disease:

Chronic conditions like obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver disease, heart disease, gout, and autoimmune disorders don’t happen by chance. They are largely driven by diet and lifestyle—yet conventional medicine rarely treats them as such. Instead of offering quick fixes or temporary solutions, I focus on reversing disease by addressing its true cause: metabolic dysfunction.

What is the Root Cause of Obesity?

Obesity is not just a problem of eating too much and moving too little—it is a hormonal and metabolic disorder driven primarily by insulin resistance and chronic hyperinsulinemia (excess insulin levels).

The Role of Insulin in Fat Storage:

Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar, but it also plays a key role in fat storage. When insulin levels are high, the body is in fat-storage mode—meaning it is nearly impossible to burn fat for energy. Instead, excess glucose is converted into fat and stored, particularly in the abdomen and around organs (visceral fat).

How Modern Diets Promote Obesity:

Our modern diet—high in processed carbohydrates, refined sugars, and industrial seed oils—keeps insulin levels elevated all day long. This constant insulin surge locks fat inside fat cells, preventing weight loss despite calorie restriction or exercise.

Key Factors Driving Obesity:

✔️ Chronic Insulin Resistance – The body becomes less responsive to insulin, requiring more of it, which fuels further fat gain.

✔️ Frequent Eating & Snacking – Every time we eat, insulin rises. Eating frequently throughout the day (especially carbs) keeps insulin elevated.

✔️ Ultra-Processed Foods – These disrupt hunger hormones, increase cravings, and promote overeating.

✔️ Sleep Deprivation & Stress – Both increase cortisol, a hormone that worsens insulin resistance and promotes fat gain.

✔️ Sedentary Lifestyle – Lack of muscle engagement reduces insulin sensitivity and metabolic rate.

The Real Solution to Obesity:

Obesity is not a calorie problem—it’s a hormone problem. The only way to unlock fat stores and promote sustainable weight loss is to lower insulin levels. This is achieved through:

✅ Eliminating ultra-processed foods and refined carbs
✅ Eating whole, nutrient-dense foods that regulate hunger naturally
✅ Prioritizing protein and healthy fats to promote satiety
✅ Incorporating intermittent fasting to lower insulin levels
✅ Building muscle through resistance training

Once insulin levels drop, fat loss happens naturally—without hunger or extreme restriction.

What is the Root Cause of Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is NOT a disease of high blood sugar—it is a disease of insulin resistance.

How Type 2 Diabetes Develops:

Unlike type 1 diabetes, where the body cannot produce insulin, type 2 diabetes occurs when the body produces too much insulin for too long due to poor diet and lifestyle choices. Over time, the cells become resistant to insulin, requiring the pancreas to pump out even more of it. Eventually, the pancreas becomes exhausted, and blood sugar levels skyrocket.

The real problem isn’t high blood sugar—it’s insulin resistance. Yet, conventional medicine treats type 2 diabetes as a glucose problem, prescribing insulin or medications that increase insulin production. This approach only worsens the disease by adding even more insulin to an already overloaded system.

Why the Standard Treatment Approach is Wrong:

Doctors traditionally say that type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease, meaning it will get worse over time and require more medications. But this is false. The only reason diabetes worsens is because the real cause—insulin resistance—is never addressed.

Giving more insulin to a person with type 2 diabetes is like giving alcohol to someone with alcoholism—it only feeds the problem. The right approach is to lower insulin levels naturally through:

Eliminating sugar and processed carbohydrates
Increasing healthy fats and proteins to promote satiety and metabolic stability
Incorporating fasting strategies to allow insulin levels to drop and restore insulin sensitivity
Building muscle through resistance training to improve glucose metabolism

By addressing insulin resistance at the root, type 2 diabetes can not only be managed—it can be completely reversed.

What is the Root Cause of High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)?

High blood pressure isn’t just about “too much salt.” The true cause of most cases of hypertension is metabolic dysfunction—specifically, insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and poor kidney function.

🔹 Insulin Resistance & Hypertension: Chronically high insulin levels cause blood vessels to constrict, increasing pressure inside them. At the same time, insulin signals the kidneys to retain sodium and water, leading to fluid overload and high blood pressure.

🔹 Excess Carbohydrates & Processed Foods: A diet high in refined carbohydrates and ultra-processed foods spikes insulin, triggering fluid retention and arterial stiffness.

🔹 Chronic Stress & Poor Sleep: Stress triggers cortisol, a hormone that raises blood sugar and blood pressure.

🔹 Nutrient Deficiencies: Low levels of potassium, magnesium, and omega-3s contribute to poor blood vessel function and increase hypertension risk.

👉 The Solution?
Lower insulin levels with the right nutrition
Reduce processed foods and seed oils
✅ Increase electrolytes like potassium and magnesium
✅ Incorporate stress management and quality sleep
✅ Support metabolic function with movement and exercise

Many of my patients have successfully eliminated their blood pressure medications using these strategies.
